The first ‘cemre’ has dropped in the air. According to Muslim belief, three ‘cemre’s, the harbingers of spring, drop first in the air, then in water and, finally, in the earth, a week apart.
Cemre means “ember of fire” in Arabic and defines the pile of stones thrown by Muslims at the Mount Mina during pilgrimage. The eulogies written by Court poets in the Ottoman times were named as “Cemreviye”.
In meteorological terms cemre is defined as the increase in warmth in February that is believed to drop in air, water and earth one week apart.
According to the Saatli Maarif Calendar the dropping of cemres result in storms and it snows in many parts of the country during this period. It is accepted that following the third cemre, spring arrives.
The Arabic term cemre means “piece of fire; coal in form of fire” and defines warming up.
